David was born in 1974 in Ilanz, Switzerland. From 1990 to 1995 he worked as a land surveyor with Cavigelli&Partners in Ilanz. In 1996 he begun studies for a B.S. degree in the department of Geodesy and Geoinformatics at the Institute of Technology and Management in Basel, Switzerland. He concluded studies in 1998, earning Leica's award for the best diploma thesis of the year in the field of Geodetic Science. From 1999 to 2000 he studied at the Department of Computer Science in the same place, concluding with a B.S. in Computer Science.
In 2000 he worked as a software developer with GEONOVA AG, Basel, BL, Switzerland, before beginning studies leading to a M.S. at the University of Maine at Orono, USA, which he successfully concluded in December 2002. From January 2003 to December 2003, he worked as a Senior Software Developer with IST - Intelligent Spatial Technologies - a spin-off company of the Spatial Information Science Department in Orono, Maine, USA.
In January 2004 he joined the Geographic Analysis Group at the Department of Geography of the University of Zurich, where he is currently working as a research assistant towards his PhD degree, which he plans to achieve by the middle of 2007.
